Ocean News 17: AMOC Collapse No Longer Low Likelihood, Bottom Trawling Exposed, Saildrone
AMOC Collapse Likely?
Ocean News covers the most important topics in Oceanography and Marine Science on a weekly basis. This week our featured story is a new study shows the AMOC Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation is likely to collapse. The report has shifted dramatically from a very unlikely chance to 25% minimum chance in a short time. When fresh water melt from Greenland’s glaciers are added to the models, will the timeline shift forward again? The AMOC has collapsed in the past, can it happen again? Seems more and more likely with every new study.
D-2 New AUV CTD
The new D2 AUV CTD could be the perfect tool for gathering more data to analyze the AMOC. Providing extremely accurate salinity, temperature and pressure for any AUV, glider, or UUV vehicles. (Link Coming Soon)
Oceans Exposes Bottom Trawling
Also in this weeks episode is a report from the film Oceans by David Attenborough exposing bottom trawling. Truly horrific sight as a fishing net scoops up everything in it’s path destroying the seabed in the process. There must be a better way of doing this.
State of the Climate Report
State of the climate report has come out for the 2024 year, and it is not good. The climate report shows we are seeing all times highs for temperatures and ice loss from glaciers. Sea level rise is also seeing all new time highs for a single year.
New Technology allowing Scientists to See New Information
MIT-WHOI Joint Program Graduate Kelly Sutherland uses florescent dye to capture jellyfish movements. Hurricane Laura was mapped out using new technology that allowed scientists to truly see the eyewall of the storm.
New USV Benchmark Achieved
Saildrone has marked a new achievement and is advancing autonomous ship building to new levels with their largest USV achieving full classification from ABS American Bureau of Shipping.
