Ocean News 18: 40 Years Since RMS Titanic Discovery, RV Dagon Sets New Record for Deep Dives!

RMS Titanic Discovery and Secret Mission

Ocean News 18 features a story about the RMS Titanic Discovery. Now 40 years ago by Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Intuition. The discovery of the Titanic was actually a cover for a top secret US Navy mission to locate two lost nuclear submarines. Of course the Titanic was found by using new techniques and new technology that has reshaped our ability to study the world’s oceans. 40 years later these innovative technologies are now the backbone of Oceanographic research. ROV’s such as Alvin are now AUV’s and UUV’s and are of every shape and size. Robert Ballard is still using these new devices inspired by his work to explore the Ocean.

R/V Dagon Breaks Record with All Female Crew

Our Next story comes from the RV Dagon, and their record setting dive. The first all female crew to dive to 8000 meters aka 26,000+ feet down. There are only 14 mountains that stretch above 8000 meters in the world, just as there are few places on Earth that deep. The report includes some really interesting sea life that is living in some cases 6000 meters under the sea.

Here at D-2 we are proud to support both WHOI and RV Dagon with our CTDs. RV Dagon setting records: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3g823r3jyxo
