Ocean News 22 Summary…
Kraken Katfish
We started out this week with a story in regards to Kraken Robotics KATFISH Unmanned Surface Vessel Launch and Recovery System (USV-LARS). This worked in conjunction with the TKMS ATLAS UK’s 11-metre Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) ARCIMS deployed by the UK Royal Navy. The demonstration shows the two unmanned systems working together seamlessly. This is important as all militaries are moving toward more unmanned systems. China Exploring Parts unknown in the Arctic Ocean
The Chinese are the first to have mapped out the volcanically active Gakkel Ridge, in the Arctic Ocean. As China continues to expand it’s operations in the Northern Pole, they have produced some extremely important scientific findings. One of the hardest places to reach on planet Earth, over 5,000 meters below the Arctic ice, manned submersibles dove and performed scientific research. The Arctic and Antarctic Poles are Extremely Dynamic Yet Fragile
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution published a graphic of the Arctic and Antarctic Ice sheet growth and decline during various seasons. Show just how dynamic these two places on Earth are, growing huge ice sheets in the winter which melt in the summer time. Very interesting graphic created by satellite imagery over years. Remember the Sextant?
Ocean Exploration has not always been as simple as using a GPS to navigate, in a now seemingly distant past the Sextant was one of the original devices used to navigate via the stars. Requiring extreme skill and the night hours to acquire position, this device helped early Oceanographers and adventurers expand our knowledge of the planet we are on today. Ocean Research and National Defense
Captain Carl Hartsfield retired from the US Navy discusses the role of Oceanographic Studies and National Defense. There is a fine line, sometimes hard to determine about what scientific research is solely for national defense purposes and what can be released to the public for the betterment of scientific understanding. Carl Hartsfield tries to explain where this line is drawn and how it is determined. Full story here: https://www.whoi.edu/oceanus/feature/three-questions-with-carl-hartsfield-national-defense-ocean/
Declining Sea Ice
